About Abbeyfield
The Abbeyfield model originated over 40 years ago in the United Kingdom. At present there are 21 operating houses in western Canada and four under construction. The Pender Harbour Abbeyfield House would provide rental accommodations (bed-sitting room with attached bathroom) for 8 to 12 elderly seniors, usually single, who are not in need of full-time nursing care in a homey, non-institutionalized atmosphere.

There would be common areas, including lounges, dining room, kitchen, and laundry room. A live-in house coordinator would be responsible for providing home-cooked meals and looking after everyday needs.

Why is Abbeyfield special?
The Abbeyfield model offers a "home within a home" to the lonely, elderly man or woman who, though relatively fit for his or her years, is no longer willing or able to live alone and, indeed, may be at risk. It also offers a warm, family-style home and a balance between privacy, companionship, security and independence, combined with the special caring element provided by dedicated volunteers. Age and loneliness are the prime considerations for residence, together with level of health and compatibility with other residents.

Abbeyfield is time-proven: Founded over forty years ago, there are now over 1,100 Abbeyfield Houses around the world with 9,000 residents and 13,000 volunteers, providing an enhanced, extended and healthy lease on life for our elders.
